7 Steps To Avoid The Summer Blowout


Much of our time during the summer is spent stood around the barbecue grazing on food and steadily drinking alcohol for hours on end.

Holidays are also a chunk of time that we eat far more than we perhaps usually would. All of these habits make weight gain over the summer period incredibly easy.


However, we have 7 simple steps that will bring easy solutions to your attention in order to avoid this increase in weight over the warmer months.


1. Spend allocated days focussing on healthy eating.

Be conscious of what and how much you are eating. Ask yourself; do I need it? By concentrating on this, your awareness will heighten and therefore you are less likely to both overeat and eat the wrong things. It’s fine to eat a few items you might not normally, but having these allocated healthy eating days will help you focus on and maintain a weight you’re happy with.


2. Set yourself a schedule.

If you are away on holiday or simply having some time off work, it is easy to become schedule free and eat whenever suits. However, do your best to maintain a schedule, these outlines will enforce your 3 meals plus 2 snacks each day and will help you to avoid endless grazing.


3. Keep busy.

There’s nothing like boredom to ensure hours of grazing without even realising you’re doing it. This doesn’t mean that you have been be zooming around from errand to errand; you just simply consciously embark on something. For instance, read a book – keeping your mind and hands busy will help you to avoid that biscuit jar. This tip works hand in hand with setting yourself a schedule – neither of these steps are intended to be demanding or gruelling, it is purely about taking control in a conscious, simple and easy manner.


4. Set yourself a goal or two.

When there is no plan or structure it is easy to dive into the fridge every time you find yourself walking past it. If you find yourself at a loose end, embark on something new and exciting; perhaps a sport you have been meaning to try, maybe some volunteer work? Maybe compile an exciting ‘to do’ list with your whole family to enjoy together. Whatever it may be, setting these goals will give you a sense of accomplishment and actually make you want to avoid snacking as you will feel more than satisfied with what you have achieved. That and the fact you won’t have chance to!


5. Consider your side dishes.

Summers are filled with grazing over a picnic or barbecue with a platter of food that will never be finished. There is no reason at all why you can’t enjoy this and maintain your weight. You simply need to alter a few things. When it comes to side dishes, we commonly see potato and pasta salads piled high and slathered in mayonnaise – and we usually only eat it because it’s there! Swap these for some gorgeous fresh salads with some drizzled over salad dressings. There is so much more flavour, taste and texture – not to mention your waistline will thank you later. 6. Be mindful of what you drink.

Drinks are as important as food when it comes to both weight maintenance and health and wellbeing. In this hot weather it is always tempting to reach for an ice-cold glass of white wine or soft drink. Consider your sugar intake with these choices, they are filled with empty calories. 7. Enjoy pudding!

Of course this doesn’t mean demolish every sweet dish in sight. But there is no reason as to why you aren’t able to enjoy pudding mindfully. Be creative! Stock up on fresh fruit for a delicious fruit salad, ensure you use seasonal fruits as they will cost less and taste sweeter! You can serve this with a dollop of natural yogurt – the combination of the creaminess and fruitiness will be a winner for all.

Divide your mixture between 4 ice lolly moulds and insert a stick into each one, place in the freezer for a minimum of 4 hours and enjoy!
