Celebrate Global Employee Health & Fitness Month

May marks Global Employee Health & Fitness Month – so join us in celebrating it by promoting healthy habits, a balanced diet, exercise, wellness and energy.

42% of men and 32% of women are overweight, but this can be improved by focusing on wellness in the workplace, promoting healthy eating and living - improving energy and morale, and therefore an improved bottom line for your company.

 

Research conducted by the International Labour Office has found that people who are off sick with musculoskeletal problems are often linked to being overweight – each employee has an average of 7.6 days of absence each year, this is to the cost of £600 per annum for the company. Or in a wider spectrum, this costs the economy £14 Billion each year!

UK companies place Nutrition as the 7th most important item on their list of priorities. In contrast, the US place exercise in 1st place, with nutrition closely following in 2nd place.

1. Eat Breakfast

2. Snack Healthy

Focus is key in order to excel at work, so fuel yourself up with smart snack choices. When in a meeting, provide oatcakes, nuts and dried and fresh fruit. 3. Use lunchtime as a break

Grow a healthy lunchtime culture within your business by encouraging employees to take a real break – no more eating at the desk. Encourage people to take a 10 minute brisk walk, even if it’s inside if the weather is inclement. This change of scene and increased blood flow will leave them feeling refreshed and productive.

Perhaps if you have the resources, set up a small exercise class or running group at lunchtime or after work? This will not just encourage improved fitness - it’ll also promote teamwork and improved morale.

 

4. Friday is cake day

If your team is large and office based, then you have probably noticed that it is always someone’s birthday and with that comes the endless supply of cake. Cake creates energy slumps. Instead of having cake in the office each day, declare Friday cake day. Whilst making Friday cake day, why not make Monday salad day? Simply get each employee to bring in a salad food item and combine them into a giant salad bowl – that’s lunch sorted, cheaply and healthily!

 

5. Tackle the afternoon slump

All of the above points go someway to improving the afternoon slump. However, tackle it head on by placing a bowl of fruit in the office at 3pm each day to encourage healthy snacking. A piece of fruit will help people over the afternoon slump much more effectively than a packet of crisps or a bar of chocolate.
