Celebrate Global Employee Health And Fitness Month - 5 Steps To How And Why!

14.05.2014

Join us in celebrating Global Employee Health and Fitness Month – promoting healthy habits, a balanced diet, exercise, wellness and energy.

Encouraging health and wellness within the workplace is essential not only to increase staff morale, but also improve your profit margins.

Those who eat a diet rich in sugar for example, will experience lethargy, grogginess and the inability to work to the best of their ability.

Research conducted by the International Labour Office has found that people who are off sick with musculoskeletal problems are often linked to being overweight – each employee has an average of 7.6 days of absence each year, this is to the cost of £600 per annum for the company. Or in a wider spectrum, this costs the economy £14 Billion each year!

UK companies place Nutrition as the 7th most important item on their list of priorities. In contrast, the US place exercise in 1st place, with nutrition closely followed in 2nd.

42% of men and 32% of women are overweight, but this can be improved by focusing on wellness in the workplace, promoting healthy eating and living - improving energy and morale, and therefore a greater bottom line for your company.

Here we have 5 simple steps that will encourage healthy living, promoting energy and wellness throughout your employees and business:

1. Breakfast

Research shows that people perform better throughout the day when they have eaten breakfast.Encourage your employees to eat breakfast by providing oats so simple and a microwave or simply by providing fruit to help them fuel up first thing.

2. Meetings

Meetings can be long or short but all require the attendees to feel awake and alert.Chocolate biscuits and shortbreads do not help people stay switched on.Instead provide oatcakes, nuts and dried fruit and fresh fruit. We recommended this strategy to a business recently and all the healthy food was eaten whilst the biscuits remained almost untouched.

3. Lunchtime

Grow a healthy lunchtime culture within your business by encouraging employees to take a real break. No more eating at the desk. Instead encourage people to eat their lunch elsewhere, take a 10 minute brisk walk and then return to work feeling refreshed and productive.

4. Friday = cake day

If your team is large and office based then you have probably noticed that it is always someone’s birthday and with that comes the endless supply of cake.Cake creates energy slumps. Instead of having cake in the office each day, declare Friday as cake day.

5. Afternoon slump

At 3pm each day place a bowl of fruit in the office to encourage healthy snacking. Eating a piece of fruit will help people over the afternoon slump much more effectively than a packet of crisps a chocolate bar or a can of fizzy drink.
