Important Article In The Times

We feel compelled to report on this piece in The Times written by Frances Gibb, please see this article below.

Here at The Healthy Employee we feel this is of vital importance to business as 25% of adults in England are classified as overweight or obese - this is due to rise to 50% by 2020. Being overweight and obese brings heightened risk of diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and some cancers.

The added weight also puts extra stress and strain on backs and joints leading to musculoskeletal problems.

The upshot of this is that people carrying more weight than is medically healthy, are more likely to be absent from work.

Bosses facing a heavy burden as obese are ruled to be disabled.

The Times (Frances Gibb) reports that obese staff may have to be provided with larger office seats, lifts and priority parking by their employers after a European Court of Justice ruling that they have a disability that must be accommodated in the workplace.

A preliminary opinion from the chief legal adviser to the court said it was unlawful to discriminate against a person who is so obese that their size affects their work.

The ruling is likely to affect all those classified as severely or morbidly obese – an estimated 1m Britons. Such employees will now be classified as disabled and have protection under the Equality Act 2010.

The Daily Mail (Arthur Martin) adds that Niilo Jaaskinen, advocate general at the court, said that just because obesity can be self-inflicted, it is not less worthy of being classed as a disability.
