March 23rd - National Spinach Day

March 23rd is National Spinach Day, so we thought it fitting to bring to your attention the benefits that this leafy green vegetable can bring to your health and wellbeing.

Spinach is a great source of potassium, iron, protein, magnesium, anti-oxidants, Vitamin K, Vitamin A and fibre. All of these sources bring significant improvements to varying aspects of your health. Below we outline these:

 

 

  • Cancer prevention: Spinach contains chlorophyll which has shown to be beneficial when it comes to blocking cancer causing effects of heterocyclic amines which are produced when grilling foods at a high temperature.
  • Bone health: Spinach is high in Vitamin K which helps to strengthen your bones and therefore lower your risk of bone fracture.
  • Lower blood pressure: The potassium that is contained within spinach helps to negate the effects of sodium within the body, lowering your blood pressure.
  • Asthma prevention: Beta-carotene is a nutrient within spinach that has been found to reduce the risk of developing asthma.
  • Promotes regularity: Spinach has a high fibre and water content, both of which help prevent constipation and promote a healthy digestive tract.
  • Diabetes management: Spinach contains an antioxidant known as alpha-lipoic acid. This has been shown to lower glucose levels, increase insulin sensitivity and prevent oxidative stress-induced changes within individuals with diabetes.
  • Healthy skin and hair: The Vitamin A found within spinach helps the body to produce sebum which is necessary in keeping hair moisturised. It is also necessary for the growth of all bodily tissues, including skin and hair. The high levels of iron within spinach also fight against hair loss.
