Men, Time To Look After Your Health – Top 5 Tips To Improved Health

04.06.2014

National Men’s Health Week

9th – 15th June

If you are a man reading this, ask yourself honestly, do you look after your health? Is there more you could do to take better care of yourself? If the answer is yes then where would you begin?

According to a recent survey almost 9 out of 10 men don’t take themselves to the doctor unless they have a serious problem and even then they are reluctant to pay their GP a visit.

Did you know that 42% of men are overweight? Are you one of them? Being overweight can lead to diseases such as chronic heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and stroke. Being overweight can also make us unhappy, dissatisfied with ourselves and affect our self-confidence and self-esteem. Don’t let your weight bring you down, take action and do something about it now.

Research shows that only 25% of men consume the government’s recommendation for fruit and vegetables of 5 a day. The health, wellbeing and longevity of men and women is dramatically increased when we consume 7+ fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. It just takes a couple of tweaks to fit in into your routine.

Try out our Top 5 Tips to improved health to help you feel in tip top condition:

1. Eat 7+ fruit and vegetables daily.  In fact the more dark green leafy veggies you can cram in the better.  It’s easy with just a couple of tweaks, follow our suggestions –

  • Add a chopped banana or grated apple to your morning porridge
  • Take fruit to work with you and snack on it through the day
  • Try our take to work lunches to get more veggies in – wraps & pittas, salads or simply rustle together one of our varied and delicious lunch recipes
  • Try our quick, easy and delicious stir-fry’s in the evening – recipe here

2. When was the last time you went to the gym? If you can’t remember then do something about it and book yourself a session with a personal trainer. Many gyms’ provide this as a complimentary service. If you visit the gym regularly make sure you update your routine every 6 weeks to help you build muscle, strength and stamina.

3. Outdoor exercise. Not a fan of the gym? Then make the most of the light evenings and improved weather and go out for a run or a cycle. Make the most of the fresh air and the vitamin D from the sun’s rays.

4. Want to improve your diet. Then it’s a great idea to know what you are eating now. Keep a food diary for a couple of days to help you understand your eating patterns and to help you improve your habits. You may identify that you skip breakfast or perhaps graze on chocolate digestives or crisps. By writing it all down you will see at a glance what needs to change. Then decide to tackle one change at a time and make a real difference to your health – Download your food diary here.

5. Are you a coffee freak? Do you consume caffeine just to keep you going? Did you know that caffeine promotes weight gain especially around the middle? Plus caffeine will keep you awake at night and can make you jittery, bad tempered and irritable. If this is you, then reduce your coffee (and tea) to no more than 4 cups each day. Instead drink water or naturally caffeine free fruit and herbal teas that will help to keep you hydrated and improve your sleep quality.
