Movember - Eating For Health

Each November men's health is brought to the forefront of our attention in the form of facial hair. Established in 2003, Movember foundation’s aim is to focus on the awareness and fundraising for 3 key areas of men’s health; prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention. The global charity is committed to men living happier, healthier and longer lives.

It is reported that 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Testicular cancer is the most common type of cancer in men, with those being the most at risk being between the ages of 25-49. It is also reported that 13 men take their own lives each day in the UK.

Statistically, obese men are more likely to develop prostate cancer than those whom are of a healthy weight. Research from Oxford University has shown that every 4 extra inches on top of a healthy waist measurement increases a man’s rick of the diagnosis by 13%.

With all of these shocking statistics, it is apparent that more needs to be done in order to raise awareness, understanding and ultimately reach a point in time when statistics begin to decrease. Greater research, education and therefore funding are all necessary in reaching this goal.

At The Healthy Employee, we advocate a strong sense of health and wellbeing and follow closely the research and findings that contribute towards the understanding linking certain illnesses to diet.

Food plays a vital role in establishing the best form of health. Healthy food choices will help to both strengthen your immune system, and boost your mood to increase resilience and energy. This gives your body the very first defense against illness.

The World Cancer Research Fund stated that a diet rich in vegetables and fruit does have a protective effect and may decrease the risk of certain cancers.

Simon Grieveson, of charity Prostate Cancer UK states that staying active and maintaining a healthy weight could protect you against many diseases, including prostate cancer. Maintaining an active lifestyle will also help to clear the mind and relieve stress.

The most we can do to protect ourselves is live a healthy and balanced lifestyle when it comes to food, fluid, exercise and sleep. Recognising signs and symptoms of any of these illnesses is also of utmost importance as there is support, advice and treatment out there - please see the links below for a more indepth overview of the illness mentioned within this article.
