National Blueberry Month Is Here - 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Eating Your Fair Share!


Blueberries have been proven to give us a huge range of health benefits, from those you’ll recognise on a daily basis, to those bigger risks that become much bigger as we get older.

In order to strengthen your fight against the following conditions and strengthen your daily health and wellbeing, be sure to incorporate blueberries into your daily diet – and here is why:


1. Boost performance by 11%

Blueberries are chocked full of antioxidants, one of which is flavonoids. Research has suggested that flavonoids may improve cognition and learning - boosting your focus, concentration and therefore your performance.

How does it work? Simply, blueberries increase the blood flow to the brain and this in turn improves focus, concentration and performance.

A study has been carried out involving 6th formers in exam conditions. Half ate a blueberry smoothie and half ate a banana smoothie. The results showed that those who ate the blueberry smoothies out performed those who ate the banana smoothie by 11%.


2. Reduce risk of cancer

The deep blue colour in blueberries is because they are rich in another antioxidant – anthocyanins. Anthocyanins have been shown to have some significant cancer-fighting effects.


3. Reduce inflammation and improve heart health

When your arteries become inflamed, they begin to narrow, increasing your risk of blockages and therefore a heart attack. However, scientists have discovered the anthocyanin’s within blueberries assist in dilating arteries and therefore your fight against heart attacks.  

Similarly, a study carried out in 2012 on 93,000 women, found that those who ate 3 or more portions of blueberries per week had a 32% lower risk of heart attack in comparison to those who ate blueberries once a month of less.


4. Aid digestion

A study carried out in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that men who consumed a wild blueberry drink every day for 6 weeks saw an increase in two types of bacteria essential for gut health. Snacking on blueberries daily will clearly have a huge impact on the health of your digestion!


5. Reduce risk of Parkinson’s and heighten mood

Blueberries increase the production of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter – this is a chemical released by nerve cells and sent to other nerve cells. Increased production of dopamine will heighten your mood, leaving you feel better and happier. This increase in production has also been found to lower your risk of Parkinson’s.
