National Know Your Numbers Week - 14-20 September 2015

10.09.2015

From 14th September until 20th September this year, it is National Know Your Numbers Week. This week is highlighted every year, and so it should be! Know your numbers week is a reminder to you as to what your numbers really are.

But what do we mean when we say numbers?

National Know Your Numbers Week is based on your blood pressure, and the complications that can arise if your blood pressure is too high, organised by the Blood Pressure Association. However, we also see it as a great opportunity to reiterate the importance of knowing your:

  • Cholesterol level
  • Body Mass index
  • Hip to Waist Ratio

Many people are unaware of their own statistics, not least the risks they carry if they are not within the healthy range. For example, your blood pressure and cholesterol could actually be extremely high, and you could be completely unaware! If they are above the healthy range, you are more at risk of suffering from heart disease, stroke along with heart and kidney disease. Each year, 125,000 adults in the UK have a heart attack or stroke due to high blood pressure..

This week highlights the importance of monitoring your health stats on a regular basis so that you can tackle and improve any ailing health you may be experiencing, reducing your chances of serious diseases or conditions further down the road.

Along with regular testing, eating a balanced diet is something you should do in order to keep these numbers within the healthy range.

Top tips for a healthy lifestyle:

  • Eat real food
  • Avoid all processed foods
  • Avoid snacks with high fat or sugar content
  • Drink no more than 4 cups of tea or coffee each day
  • Eat at least 5 times a day
  • Drink 2 litres of water each day
  • Shop the ‘L’ of the supermarket (the fresh fruit & veg aisles, and across the deli counter at the rear of the store)
  • Include plenty of dark green leafy vegetables in your everyday diet
  • Avoid breakfast cereals (except porridge)

So what are you waiting for? Get those measurements recorded and take note of your numbers, your future may well depend on it!
