National Know Your Numbers Week 12-18th Sept

08.09.2016

National Know Your Numbers Week is running from 12th – 18th September this year. This week is a campaign created by Blood Pressure UK, reiterating the importance of monitoring your blood pressure and the risks you may be carrying if you don’t.

For health and wellbeing, it is vital to have your blood pressure monitored from time to time, but at The Healthy Employee we recognise that health and wellbeing is reliant on more than your blood pressure numerical result.

Do you know your:

  • Cholesterol level?
  • Blood glucose level?
  • Body Mass index?
  • Hip to Waist Ratio?

Being unaware of your numbers and statistics can leave you vulnerable to many health risks. These risks include cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, cancers, depression and anxiety and ultimately premature death.

According to Public Health England:

  • ⅔ of adults in England are overweight or obese.
  • Approximately 1 in 11 deaths in the UK is linked to carrying excess fat.
  • On average one person dies every three minutes from Cardiovascular disease in the UK.
  • Stroke causes nearly 40,000 deaths in the UK each year.
  • Nearly 3.5 million adults in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes. Approximately 500,000 more are living with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes.
  • 30% of adults in the UK have high blood pressure – 50% are not receiving treatment.

Monitoring your health stats regularly will put you in the control seat, enabling you to improve any ailing health you may be experiencing, reducing your chances of serious diseases or conditions in the future.

In order to encourage health numbers, making the right lifestyle choices is paramount.

Top tips for a healthy lifestyle:

  • Eat real food
  • Eat less sugar and salt
  • Drink no more than 4 cups of tea or coffee each day
  • Have regular meals, starting with breakfast
  • Eat at least 5 portions of different fruit and veg a day
  • Drink 2 litres of water each day
  • Drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over at least 3 days with 2 consecutive alcohol free days
