March 10th is National Pack Your Lunch Day, so why not take the opportunity to make a delicious lunch at home ready for work the next day?

1. Gain Energy

By planning and packing your own lunch and snacks for work, it means that you're able to load yourself up with lean proteins and low GI carbohydrates that will enable you to perform at your best throughout the day as you will maintain a steady blood sugar level. If you have an day that you know will be very long and feature back-to-back meetings or long distances in the car, then once again, you can plan your lunch and snacks around this accordingly to enable you to function to your best possible ability.

 

2. Healthier Eating

You will need to plan what you are eating when you're at the supermarket, and this planning will encourage you to make good choices with your meals and snacks. You also know exactly what is going into each of your lunches – rather than consuming hoards of processed foods from the canteen. Essentially, if you don’t make it from real ingredients, you have no idea what’s in it! There are hidden nasties in what may seem to be smart food choices, such as fruit smoothies or salad dressings.

 

3. Save Money

There are 253 working days in 2015. Let’s assume that you spend £5.00 on lunch, snacks and drinks throughout each working day - that’s £1265 every single year! Basic ingredients from the supermarket can be made delicious using herbs and spices, or simply by combining together, and at a mere fraction of the price.

 

4. Variety

When you are packing your lunch and snacks, aim for variety, you’re in control after all! The danger is getting stuck in a rut, which culminates in boredom and inevitably leads to temptation. Don’t be afraid to mix it up, experiment and perhaps even try a new food once a week? The options are endless!

 

5. More Time To Relax

Having a proper lunch break is essential in order to recharge your batteries and should therefore be utilised to it’s fullest. By having your own lunch, this puts you in the drivers seat with your lunch hour. If you are relying on buying food, you are most likely having to join the back of the cafeteria queue, pick an unhealthy and often unwanted meal, shovel it down without taking a breath, to rush back to your desk for the remainder of the day.
