Significant Energy & Afternoon Slump Improvements

Did you know that 2.55pm is the time when least work is done?

It is not really surprising because this is around 1 to 1.5 hours after a carb-loaded lunch of sandwiches with mayo or a baguette or fish and chips or maybe a burger. Following the input of refined carbohydrates is a distinct dip in both physical and mental energy; what’s known as the afternoon slump. 

 

Recently we worked with a leading insurance company, Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund, running healthy eating telephone coaching programmes for a number of their employees. The feedback and data we gathered was astounding with employees making an incredible difference to their physical and mental energy particularly in the afternoon.

 

The results of making some dietary changes were astounding;

Energy: Average individual improvement in energy of 64%. 

Afternoon Slump:  Average individual improvement in the afternoon slump of 87.5%.

 

Julia Maskell, an employee of BHSF said, “I had not banked on the change of energy. That has been a welcome bonus. The afternoon slump would hit me after lunch. In the past I have actually pulled up at a service station, set the alarm on my phone, opened the window and had a nap. I am pleased to say that no longer happens and I feel much more energised in the afternoon.”

Healthy eating education is vitally important to the smooth running of your business. Consider this; if you put diesel into a petrol car it's not going to get too far! The same is true for the food your employees fuel up on. Encouraging people to make some simple and easy changes to their diets and be mindful of their 'fuel' will foster all-round improved performance in the workplace.
