Take The Pressure Off

28.06.2017

One in three UK adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure puts you at greater risk of developing a number of serious health conditions such as, stroke, heart attack and kidney disease. While there are medications to reduce this, there are also a number of foods that can help you the natural way.

Blood pressure lowering foods

Beetroot

Beetroot contains high levels of nitrates. These nitrates convert into nitric oxide when consumed, which helps to keep your blood vessels elastic, helping to keep your blood pressure lower.

Spinach, cabbage, swiss chard & kale

All of these vegetables contain high levels of potassium. Potassium combats against the negative effect of salt, which in turns helps to lower your blood pressure.

Cashews & almonds

Both of these nuts are great sources of magnesium, which is strongly linked to lowering blood pressure. You also only need a small handful to consume 20% of your daily requirements.

Seeds

These include pumpkin, sunflower and flax. They are all rich sources of potassium and magnesium – which have both shown to lower blood pressure.

Low-fat natural yoghurt

Low-fat natural yoghurt contains a compound called peptides, it is thought that this element that is released during digestion aids the lowering of blood pressure.

Oily fish

Oily fish such as fresh salmon and tuna are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which have been found to have a blood pressure lowering effect.
