A study conducted on more than 10,000 women aged 55-65 in the mid-1980s has shown that those who ate a healthier diet were more likely to live longer, no matter their age. Specifically it showed that those eating a Mediterranean diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, fish and olive oil were the healthiest overall.

 

 

Some people are under the preconception that perhaps it is too late to undo the damage they have done when it comes to consuming the wrong foods and drinks. However, research has shown that it’s never too late.

The data from the research shows that: ‘Those with healthier dietary patterns at mid-life were 40% more likely to survive to the age of 70 and over.’ With the extended life expectancy came a higher likelihood that your physical abilities, mental wellbeing and cognitive function will stay present for longer.

Those who aged more healthily and lived for longer, were found to exercise more throughout their mid-life years and also be less likely to be obese and smoke.

It is also believed that although these results were based on a study on women, there is no reason as to why the findings would be any different for men.

In conclusion, it goes to show that it’s never too late to make a positive impact on your current and future health and wellbeing by eating a healthy diet.
