Vending Machines - The Verdict

10.03.2015

Vending machines are essentially part of the furniture when it comes to office space, regularly topped up with chocolate bars, sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks.

Having a vending machine available to employees is a disaster when it comes to work flow and the afternoon slump. You may see a pattern emerge come mid afternoon, with regular visitors to the vending machine, purchasing a vital pick me up snack as they are feeling depleted of energy and in need of a sugar surge to see them through the remainder of the working day.

This problem usually stems from an insufficient lunch. However, a sugary vending machine snack does little to improve matters. Vending machine snacks are mainly saturated with sugar, fat and preservatives.

However, we have considered the idea of healthy vending machine snacks, but it seems that they are vastly few and far between. These ‘healthy’ snacks begin on the right premise, originating from oats or nuts, but they are then combined with salt, sugar or chocolate etc. All of a sudden, healthy oats have become a small energy snack bar loaded with a quick sugar rush, and followed swiftly by an energy plummet.

It seems that there is no immediate solution when it comes to having real foods inside vending machines as they often bruise easily and have a shorter shelf life. With this in mind, we feel it is probably most effective to get rid of vending machines altogether.

Most offices have a cafeteria, which should be utilised to it’s fullest. Start to really think about what the demand is within your workplace. Perhaps even send a questionnaire out through a blanket email with a range of different snack choices, to discover the preferences within your workplace in order to avoid wasted food and money.

We have a range of simple and none time consuming snack ideas to get you started:
