Why Your Health And Wellbeing Depends On You Acclimatising To The Winter Months


Now the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in, it is vital to adjust your lifestyle to suit the cold winter months in order to feel and be at your best.

The lack of daylight and cold weather is more likely to lower our mood, decrease our energy and increase our grumpiness. Most of us also have a tendency to gain weight.



Why? Because naturally we hibernate throughout winter, we become less active, exercise takes a back seat, and stodgy and comfort foods become a regular occurrence. 75% of us are emotional eaters, and with the general lowering of mood comes an increase in portion sizes.


So how do you ensure that this doesn’t happen to you?

  • Eat real food and avoid processed foods at all cost. Check out our wide array or recipes to suit any occasion for real, delicious and healthy food.
  • Sleep with your curtains open. This may sound daft but as the daylight begins to appear in the morning, you will naturally begin to wakeup, which is far more beneficial for your wellbeing than being startled by an alarm in a pitch-black room.
  • Perhaps buy yourself a Seasonal Affective Disorder ‘SAD’ Lamp. Many of us will go to work in the dark and return from work in the dark, this will only hinder your health and wellbeing. But by used a SAD lamp, it will give you the boost of daylight you need in order to brighten your mood, increase your energy and improve your sleep.
  • Rearrange your exercise to suit the current season. For example, if you are someone who loves exercising outdoors, perhaps you can rearrange your day so that you are able to exercise whilst it is light outside. Maybe you are unable to do this, in which case why not try a different form of exercise? Many gyms offer classes to include a vast variety of exercise disciplines. Try several different ones and see what works for you? Working up a sweat with new faces after a long day can often be a great positive boost that will make the winter months fly by.
  • Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up if you are feeling low over the winter period. It is a natural reaction for our bodies to go through. Simply be proactive and use the above tips to help boost your mood and energy, deterring you from reaching for that comfort food and hibernating away for the next 3 months.
