World Health Day 7th April

29.03.2018

The 7th April is World Health Day, and therefore a great opportunity to further instigate health and wellbeing throughout your family, friends, workplace and of course, yourself.

World Health Day was brought about under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), having the day dedicated to a subject of major importance to global health each year. These topics have included, ‘Good health adds life to years’, ‘Healthy heart beat, healthy blood pressure’, ‘Halt the rise: beat diabetes’, and ‘Working together for health’, plus many more.

Maintaining good health and wellbeing is vital when it comes to feeling your best and performing at your optimum ability. What you choose to eat will have the biggest influence on your day-to-day health, so making the right choices will give you the best chance of looking and feeling your best.

When it comes to food, there are four main food groups you should be eating from on a daily basis. These include:

  • Fruits and vegetables – rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre
  • Starchy foods – high in energy
  • Protein, including meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds and pulses – essential for growth, repair and iron levels
  • Dairy – a great source of protein and calcium

As well as this:

  • A small amount of fat is essential for health, but choose unsaturated fats such as olive oil and avocado
  • Aim to drink 6-8 glasses of water each day, but more if the weather is hot or you exercise on that given day
  • Avoid foods high in salt, fat and sugar as they are not needed in the diet and contribute very little by way of nutrition

Health isn’t just about being a healthy weight. Looking after yourself will help to reduce lethargy, boost mood and increase immunity, putting you in control of your day from the outset.
