Natalie Wilford - Healthy eating is now firmly part of my lifestyle.

I felt compelled to take part in The Healthy Employee healthy eating programme because up until now I have always controlled my weight with exercise. However, as I’ve got older I’ve found my weight creeping up a pound or two each year. Also I felt my blood sugar could, at times, be all over the place and I felt dissatisfied and would have cravings. I like being in control and in charge of my life and on this occasion I felt I needed help with this. I am also getting married next year and I really want to feel and look great for that. 

I have reached my goals and now I can have a few treats and plan when I will have wine or chocolate and I enjoy them. 

Then the healthy eating programmes came along through SCC, the company I work for, and I thought this presented an excellent opportunity to address a healthy eating education that would help me lose a few pounds now but more importantly, learn how to manage my weight in the future. 

I was surprised by how easy the whole process was. It helped having my weekly telephone catch up calls with my coach. This was an opportunity to discuss what had happened for the previous week and to help me plan the coming week. I found talking through what foods to have on-the-go really useful and helpful. I get organised and take food in the car with me which means I don’t have any of that horrible down time where my energy flags and I feel drained. energy has improved by 30%.

Healthy eating is now firmly part of my lifestyle. I have reached my goals and now I can have a few treats and plan when I will have wine or chocolate and I enjoy them. I will never go back to having a baguette or a bowl of pasta because I feel bloated and tired afterwards.

The afternoon slump would affect me and I would feel very tired. I would have lunch at 12 and by 2pm or 2.30pm I was craving something else which was insane as I’d just eaten. That has gone away now and my energy has improved by 30%.

I was surprised that cutting out the cereals, pasta and bread made most of the bloating go away. I lost inches and not just weight loss by making small changes to my diet. I was one of those people who thought I would not be able to make the changes. I have realised that people just make excuses not to get healthier and I would say to anyone just do it and then tell me how hard it was! Because it genuinely is not hard, we just like to throw obstacles in our own way. 

I would recommend these programmes to everyone. In fact I think everyone at SCC should have a healthy eating programme.

I think work is the place to do it because that’s where the bad habits are. It is not the weekend in your personal life where you need the energy but at work during your working week.
